MITP, Valletta
March 1994

Theatre anon’s adaptation of Voltaire’s short story was first presented at the MITP theatre in Valletta in March 1994 and repeated in summer 1995 as part of the Maltafest cultural programme.

Voltaire’s satirical piece was written in 1758 but it retains a broad appeal due to its relevance even today. Candide tackles the philosophical difficulty that God has created a universe where suffering abounds. Voltaire uses the novel to unleash a scathing attack on the current ‘optimistic’ philosophy of his day. Candide travels round the world suffering all sorts of indignity and abuse but accepts it all in the belief that “it is all for the best in this the best of all possible worlds”
